Gravestones and the memorial rite: what a family needs to know

Months pass between the wooden cross and the finished stone. Here is the order of it: what happens on which day, and how to prepare for the service.

In order: from the cross to the stone

A wooden cross goes up on the day of the burial, and it is meant as a temporary marker. The ground settles slowly, and a heavy stone laid too early can lean or sink with it. Most families therefore wait until close to the first anniversary, when the soil has stopped moving.

The fortieth day and the anniversary are when a priest is usually asked to serve at the graveside. If you want the stone in place by then, the work has to begin well before, because a concrete footing needs time to cure. Exact days differ between dioceses and families, so settle the date with your priest.

What we do

Each part of arranging a grave — separately or as a single package, as you choose.

Making the stone and monument

We cut the gravestone from granite and natural material — in the form, size and height you wish, following a design chosen together with you.

Fence installation

We make and install a sturdy fence that clearly marks the boundary of the grave and gives the whole a finished appearance.

Tiling and stone paving

We cover the surface with tile or stone so that water does not collect, grass does not grow through, and the place stays clean for years.

Inscription and engraving

We carry out precise engraving of the name, dates and photograph — legible and made to withstand the weather.

Restoring an old grave

We straighten a leaning stone, replace a collapsed fence and renew the tiling — the grave regains its dignified appearance.

Installation on site

We transport the stone and material to the cemetery and secure it so that it stands firm and level on any terrain.

Answers to common questions

Should the stone go up at forty days or at the anniversary?

Neither date is forbidden by the church, and the reason to wait is practical. Until the ground has settled, a footing can sink or lean, so many families choose the anniversary. If you want it finished by the fortieth day, the plot has to be looked at first.

What should the family prepare for the day of the service?

Agree the time with the priest, bring candles and wine, and check the rest of the list with your own parish, since local custom differs a little. Tidy the grave the day before, so that nobody is still doing it while people are gathering.

Who blesses a newly set stone?

A priest does, at the family's request: a short prayer is read at the graveside, often together with the memorial service. You arrange the date with the church, and we schedule the installation so that the work is finished before that day.
